Lead Lighting
& Mosaics
Lead lighting
The Making…
It began with the building of a home. We wanted a unique lead lighting to frame our front door and down the hallway. Being unable to find someone to do it, I chose to make it myself.
Mosaics
Starting as an activity with my children, mosaics have developed into larger, more detailed pieces reflecting stories and locations of my clients, and friends. The projects often include special pieces or fragments of past lives, giving additional meaning to the commission.
The Process
Step One: Find the glass. Search scrap yards, second-hand stores to find vintage glass.
Step Two: Buy needed tools, start practices and go back to buy more tools.
Step Three: Liaise with friends to draw up the design.
Step Four: The project begins - Choose which glass to use. Cut the glass making mistakes and learning lots
Step Five: Join the pieces together using lead came for the frame
Step Six: Solder the joins and clean the pieces.
Step Seven: Get very messy cementing to pieces to seal them. Have to work very efficiently to get the excess off before it sets.
Step Eight: Blackening the lead and polishing the glass.
Step Nine: Mount the pieces to enjoy them, watching the light play through the different glass designs.
Since then, I have been commissioned to create special pieces for homes, gardens and businesses, including repairs to 140-year-old heritage windows.
